This handy tool can help you find free or low-cost Internet in your area so you can go online without breaking the bank.
What do you need to survive? The most obvious answers are a roof over your head and food on the table. Electricity is another need, and we can now include the Internet in that list of essentials.
Internet service is now needed more than ever, as many children are taking virtual classes at home and people began working remotely. Online access is also necessary for shopping, paying bills, and doing other things that make up part of our everyday lives.
What’s a significant problem with Internet service? Some cannot afford it. If you’re one of them, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a simple tool you can use to find affordable Internet service that may even be free.
Using EveryoneOn to Find Free or Low-Cost Internet Service
EveryoneOn is an organization that works to provide low-cost Internet service, affordable computers, and digital literacy training to those who need it most. To help you gain access to such resources, they created an online tool you can use to find what’s available near you.
To use the tool, click here. Enter your zip code in the provided field, and click on “Find Internet and Computer Offers.” Once you do so, you will be taken to Step 2 of the process, which is to check off any items that apply to your household. This is used to see if you’re eligible for certain free or low-cost Internet programs.
As you’ll see in the checklist, eligibility for free or low-cost Internet can either be determined directly by your income or whether you receive some form of public assistance. If you currently receive public assistance in the form of food stamps (SNAP), SSI, etc., the good news is that you will probably qualify for low-cost Internet.
As you check off each item, the EveryoneOn’s online tool will start to show Internet or device offers that apply to your situation. For example, checking off that you live in South Florida public housing will show that you qualify for Comcast Internet Essentials and PCs for People. While neither are free, they are affordable and can get you connected for as little as $9.95 per month. In terms of Comcast Internet Essentials, you could get two free months of service, which should help alleviate your financial strain.
Since you may need a computer or tablet to connect to the Internet for school or work, EveryoneOn’s online tool will also show you what device offers you qualify for. In the case above, a public housing resident in South Florida could get a laptop for just $160 through PCs for People or $85 via PlanITROI.
Once you’re done checking off all items that apply to your household, look at the offers you qualify for and pick one that best suits your budget. You can then click on “Sign Up” to complete the process and get connected.
